How to register and book the Ontario MPT with EQAO
The Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) is developed and administered by EQAO — the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

Who manages the MPT — and why it matters
The Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) is developed and administered by EQAO — the Education Quality and Accountability Office. EQAO is the agency you’ll deal with for everything related to booking and sitting the test. Once you’ve passed, EQAO reports your result directly to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) within 10 days.
Understanding this separation matters: the OCT sets the requirement (passing the MPT is mandatory for most new certificate holders), but EQAO handles registration, testing, and results. You’re dealing with two different organisations at different stages of your certification journey.
Where to register
Registration for the MPT is managed through EQAO’s official portal at mathproficiencytest.ca. This is also where you’ll find practice tests, resource pages, and administration date information. Bookmark it — it’s the single source of truth for everything MPT-related.
You’ll need to create an account or log in to book your test. The registration process walks you through selecting your sitting window, choosing your delivery format (in-person or remote-proctored), and confirming your details.
Test windows: when the MPT runs
The MPT is offered approximately three to four times per year, in set windows. Each window runs for several weeks — you pick a specific date within the window when you book. The published windows for 2026–27 are:
- Spring 2026: 20 April – 6 June 2026
- Fall 2026: 1 October – 14 November 2026
- Winter 2027: 28 January – 20 March 2027
- Spring 2027: 13 April – 29 May 2027
The test is available in both English and French. If you’d prefer to sit in French, the same windows apply — select your language preference when registering.
Always confirm current dates at mathproficiencytest.ca, as EQAO may update windows. The list above reflects confirmed 2026–27 administration dates as of our research.
In-person or remote-proctored?
When booking, you’ll choose one of two delivery formats:
- In-person at an approved testing centre — you travel to a designated site, sit at a monitored workstation, and complete the test there. Suitable if you prefer a structured environment, don’t have a reliable private space at home, or want to avoid technology-setup concerns.
- Remote-proctored — you sit the test at home (or another private location) via online proctoring software. A proctor monitors you through your webcam. Requires a reliable internet connection, a quiet private space, and meeting the technical requirements EQAO specifies.
Both formats deliver the same test. The choice is purely about what works best for your circumstances. Check EQAO’s technical requirements for remote sitting carefully before you book — it avoids last-minute issues on test day.
The cost — or rather, there isn’t one
The MPT is free to sit. There’s no registration fee, no per-attempt fee, and unlimited attempts are permitted (one booking at a time). This removes one common barrier, but don’t let “I can always try again” become a reason to walk in underprepared. Your time has value, and every failed attempt pushes your OCT certification timeline out — potentially by months, depending on when the next window falls.
When to book relative to your OCT application
The MPT requirement applies to most applicants whose complete OCT application is on or after 1 February 2025. If you’re currently working through your certification application, check your OCT requirements carefully to confirm whether the MPT applies to you.
If you’re an internationally educated teacher (IET), the deadline is especially important: you must pass the MPT within two years of your initial certification. Missing that window means your certification expires — so booking well in advance, and not deferring preparation, is critical.
A common-sense approach: book a test date before you start studying. Having a real date on the calendar focuses your preparation in a way that “I’ll book when I’m ready” never does.
After you sit: results and reporting
EQAO reports your result to OCT within 10 days of your test date. Results are reported as “Successful” or “Not Yet Successful” — there’s no numerical score shared with you, just the pass/fail outcome per section. If you don’t pass, you’re eligible to rebook for a future window.
Ready to start preparing?
Once you’ve got a test date, the next step is knowing where your gaps are so your study time goes to the right places. The SN Academy free diagnostic for Ontario teachers takes about 15 minutes and gives you a clear picture of your Mathematics Curriculum and Pedagogy readiness.
