Free, unlimited MPT retakes — how to use that wisely
It sounds almost too good to be true, but it is confirmed policy: the Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) charges no fee, and there is no cap on how many times you can sit it.

Yes, the Ontario MPT is genuinely free — and retakes are unlimited
It sounds almost too good to be true, but it is confirmed policy: the Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) charges no fee, and there is no cap on how many times you can sit it. If you are not successful on your first attempt, you register for the next available window and try again.
For candidates anxious about a high-stakes test, this is legitimately reassuring news. You are not gambling a registration fee each time. There is no three-strikes rule. The door stays open.
That said — and this matters — the absence of a financial penalty does not mean there is no cost to retaking the test. Understanding those hidden costs is what will help you make the most of the policy.
How the booking system works
You book one session at a time through EQAO’s registration system. You cannot pre-book multiple attempts in advance. Once you have your result — reported by EQAO to the OCT within 10 days of sitting — you can register for the next available window if needed.
The MPT is offered at least three times per year in both English and French, typically across four windows in a 12-month cycle. For 2026–27:
- Spring 2026: 20 April – 6 June
- Fall 2026: 1 October – 14 November
- Winter 2027: 28 January – 20 March
- Spring 2027: 13 April – 29 May
Each window spans several weeks, with multiple sittings available (in person or remote-proctored). You pick a date and time that works for you.
The real costs of retaking — even when it’s free
Here is where candidates sometimes underestimate the situation.
Time between windows
With roughly three to four windows per year, the gap between attempts can be two to four months. If you sit in Fall and are unsuccessful, your next realistic shot may be Winter — and then Spring after that. Those gaps add up. A second attempt in the following year is not a dramatic outcome, but it is months of delay to your certification and, by extension, to securing a teaching position.
The IET two-year deadline
For internationally educated teachers, the stakes of delay are sharper. If you receive initial Ontario certification before passing the MPT, you have exactly two years from that date to pass the test. Miss that deadline, and your certification expires.
Two years sounds generous. Factor in: getting settled, job applications, finding preparation time around other work, then the gap between test windows if an early attempt is unsuccessful — and two years can compress faster than expected. IETs, in particular, should treat first-time success as the target rather than the bonus.
Uncertainty and mental load
There is also a less-quantifiable cost: the ongoing uncertainty of having an unfinished certification requirement. Until the MPT is behind you, it is a weight. Every application, every interview, every placement offer carries the asterisk of “pending test passage.” Finishing it removes that weight.
How to use the unlimited-retake policy wisely
The right way to think about free unlimited retakes is as a safety net, not a strategy.
Use the policy for what it is genuinely useful for: removing anxiety about catastrophic outcomes. If you sit the test and fall short, the world does not end. You will get another chance. That is worth knowing.
But build your preparation around passing in the first or second attempt, not around eventually getting there. That means:
- Diagnosing your gaps before you book, not after. Know which areas of the Grades 3–9 curriculum need work before you sit, not once you receive a “Not Yet Successful” result.
- Treating the Pedagogy section seriously. Because the maths content section is larger, candidates sometimes under-prepare the pedagogy strand. Both sections must reach 70% in the same attempt — a shortfall in either section means the whole attempt does not count.
- Not leaving it to the last window. If your certification timeline has a hard deadline — a teaching contract, an IET expiry date, a school-year start — leave at least one buffer window in case you need to resit.
What the free diagnostic tells you
The single most valuable thing you can do before booking your MPT attempt is sit a diagnostic assessment that shows you where you actually stand. Most candidates overestimate their readiness in familiar topics and underestimate gaps in areas they haven’t revisited since school.
SN Academy’s free diagnostic test maps your current knowledge against the Grades 3–9 maths curriculum and the pedagogy knowledge areas — so your preparation is targeted, not guesswork.
