Free Ontario MPT Practice Questions (With Worked Solutions)
The Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) checks that you can work confidently with Grades 3–9 math — the everyday number, algebra, geometry and data skills you'll use as a teacher.
The Ontario Math Proficiency Test (MPT) checks that you can work confidently with Grades 3–9 math — the everyday number, algebra, geometry and data skills you’ll use as a teacher. It also has a pedagogy section on how math is taught. Below are 8 practice questions at MPT level, each with a full worked solution that shows the method.
Work through them, then take the complete, full-length MPT mock — free for instant scoring and a worked explanation on every question. (Remember: the real MPT offers unlimited retakes, so the goal is genuine readiness, not a lucky run.)
Try each one first, then read the solution — the method is what transfers to the test.
The questions
1. Percentage of a quantity
What is 45% of 300?
Worked solution. 10% of 300 = 30, so 40% = 120. 5% = 15. 45% = 120 + 15 = 135.
2. Order of operations
Calculate: 8 + 3 × (5 − 2).
Worked solution. Brackets first: 5 − 2 = 3. Then multiply: 3 × 3 = 9. Then add: 8 + 9 = 17. (BEDMAS: do the multiplication before the addition.)
3. Subtracting fractions
Calculate: 5/6 − 1/3.
Worked solution. Common denominator 6: 1/3 = 2/6. Then 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2.
4. Proportion (scaling a recipe)
A recipe for 4 servings uses 300 g of flour. How much flour for 6 servings?
Worked solution. Per serving: 300 ÷ 4 = 75 g. For 6: 75 × 6 = 450 g.
5. Solve a linear equation
Solve for x: 2x + 5 = 17.
Worked solution. Subtract 5: 2x = 12. Divide by 2: x = 6. (Check: 2 × 6 + 5 = 17 ✓.)
6. Geometry — area of a triangle
A triangle has base 10 cm and height 6 cm. What is its area?
Worked solution. Area of a triangle = ½ × base × height = ½ × 10 × 6 = 30 cm².
7. Data — mean
Find the mean of: 12, 15, 18, 15.
Worked solution. Add: 12 + 15 + 18 + 15 = 60. Divide by 4: 60 ÷ 4 = 15.
8. Percent increase
A class of 20 students grows by 15%. How many students now?
Worked solution. 15% of 20 = 3. New total = 20 + 3 = 23 students.
Turning practice into readiness
The MPT rewards consistent, accurate methods over speed: percentages from 10%, BEDMAS, common denominators, isolating the variable, and the core area formulas. For each question you miss, note the one step that tripped you and redo a similar one a day later. And don’t forget the pedagogy section — it’s about how math is taught, not just solving it.
Start with the Grades 3–9 math topics on the MPT and what the pedagogy section covers.
